Why Built-In Cybersecurity Is Essential for Patient Safety

Why Built-In Cybersecurity Is Essential for Patient Safety

From robotic-assisted surgery consoles to remote teleoperation setups, medical devices increasingly rely on continuous, real-time data streaming across operating rooms, enterprise hospital networks, and cloud environments. While this connectivity unlocks incredible clinical capabilities, it also creates expanded attack surfaces. If an unauthorized entity intercepts telemetry or tampers with control commands, the outcome is not just a data breach. It is a direct threat to patient well-being.

In modern connected healthcare, cybersecurity is no longer just an IT checkbox. It is an immediate requirement for patient safety. This blog post explores the key issues involved in securing connected MedTech.

The Flaw of Perimeter Defenses

Historically, device manufacturers and hospital networks relied on perimeter defenses such as firewalls and virtual private networks. However, these defenses operate on a dangerous assumption: that everything inside the network is trustworthy.

Once a rogue device or compromised asset connects inside a hospital network, traditional perimeter defenses crumble. At the same time, attempting to bolt custom security wrappers onto legacy applications after the fact introduces unacceptable latency, drives up engineering costs, and delays market launch.

Medical technology requires a Zero Trust approach, where data is protected at the source, in motion, and across every endpoint.

Real Security, Demonstrated: MedTech Reference Architecture

To give MedTech leaders a clear path forward, we have added a new module to the RTI MedTech Reference Architecture: Module 4: Mitigating Security Threats with RTI Security Extensions.

This new module extends past theoreticals and provides a practical, working demonstration showing how production-proven RTI Connext Security Extensions capabilities defend safety-critical medical systems against active cyber threats.

Using our surgical robotics foundation - Module 1: Surgical Robotics (Digital Operating Room) - Module 4 simulates two real-world attack scenarios and illustrates how Connext stops them cold:

  • Preventing Data Exfiltration: A rogue node attempts to quietly eavesdrop on streaming patient vitals and robotic telemetry. Connext immediately identifies the unauthorized credentials, rejects discovery, and prevents any data leakage, safeguarding patient confidentiality and proprietary IP.
  • Neutralizing Command Injection: An unauthorized attacker attempts to impersonate a surgical console and inject spoofed motor control overrides. Connext enforces strict, cryptographically signed access policies, discarding the unauthorized commands instantly and allowing legitimate clinical workflows to continue uninterrupted.

Strategic Business Outcomes

For healthcare executives, technology buyers, and device engineering leaders, building on RTI's secure connectivity framework delivers three clear business advantages:

  • De-Risked Regulatory Compliance: Global regulators (including the FDA under Section 524B and international bodies enforcing IEC 81001-5-1) demand documented evidence of cybersecurity by design. RTI provides an established, standards-based foundation that streamlines audits and speeds pre-market approval.
  • Uncompromised Real-Time Performance: Traditional encryption wrappers often introduce noticeable latency. Connext is engineered for ultra-low latency and deterministic performance, ensuring that advanced security never slows down closed-loop robotic control.
  • Reduced Engineering Overhead: Security governance and endpoint permissions are defined centrally in policy configurations rather than hard-coded into application logic. When compliance mandates evolve, policies can be updated without re-architecting your core software codebase.

Build for Security from Day One

Cybersecurity cannot wait for post-market patches. By designing medical devices with Zero Trust security from the ground up, manufacturers can protect their patients, preserve their brand reputation, and accelerate commercial success.
