Complex Communications Across Vast Distances

Space exploration and communication requires datalinks across millions of miles of space. Whether it be from Earth to Mars or from the International Space Station to Earth, long-distance object control relies upon space links that are low-bandwidth, high-delay and lossy. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) rely upon Connext for remote operations, many miles from the control center.

Success Stories

Integrate Large-Scale Systems
Integrate Large-Scale Systems
Artemis 1 & NASA Kennedy Space Center
RTI Connext provides communications software that is a critical core component of the launch-certified Spacecraft Command and Control System (SCCS) for NASA’s Artemis 1 Mission.

European Space Agency
ESA uses Connext for communication and video to demonstrate long-distance object control from aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
NASA robot WoF original
Outer Space Human-to-Robot Communication
NASA
NASA relies on RTI Connext because of its inherent tolerance of time delay and loss of signal that occur with signals sent across the vast distances separating the space station, satellites and land-based devices.
NASA_VIPER
Distributing Critical Data for Space Exploration
NASA VIPER
RTI Connext will be able to help control and monitor a highly data-intensive network during NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) mission.

Clear Views Into Outer Space

A new generation of very large telescopes are ushering in important scientific discoveries through clear views into outer space. These massive instruments require adaptive optics technology to correct for the effects of the Earth’s atmosphere on observations. Distortions must be detected and corrected rapidly, with mirror adjustments of upwards of thousands of times per second.

Customer Quotes

RTI-Placeholder

We’ve been using RTI products for almost a decade. When we first started experimenting with manipulating a ground robot from the international space station, we quickly realized that pairing our haptic technology with DDS was the way to go to ensure reliable communications. Only DDS can give us the ultra-low latency and rapid data throughput that we need, so that our astronauts can interact with our ground robots across vast and unimaginable distances.”

Dr. Thomas Krueger
Human Robot Interaction Laboratory, ESA

RTI-Placeholder

DDS is eminently suitable for telemetry due to its flexibility and ability to process abstraction, data efficiency and location transparency, which make it very flexible…We found the RTI framework to be very valuable, very powerful and easy to learn to use. The support tools are brilliant for finding out what’s going on under the hood.”

Edward J. Younger
