Edge Computing and Fog Computing

The edge architecture enables fast, efficient processing of specific applications through placement of servers close to where the data is generated. It supports computation, storage and connectivity for specific applications, collecting data from devices, processing it locally, and sending selected data through to the cloud for additional analytics. When applications require more complex integrations, such as between applications, a fog computing architecture is generally deployed.

RTI offers solutions to handle the real-time communications requirements of edge computing at the desired performance level from edge to cloud. Connext® Micro offers a flexible, modular framework with highly-tunable quality of service settings to work with the most resource-constrained devices for optimal performance in edge environments. Connext® provides a secure, end-to-end communications framework that delivers high performance connectivity with peer-to-peer data sharing. Edge systems will perform at the highest level through Connext DDS fault-tolerance capabilities with backup publishers and no single point of failure.

RTI is committed to advancing the work to create interoperability in edge computing, and is an active member in the edge computing task group at the Industrial Internet Consortium.
