PLATH Selects RTI's Real-Time Messaging Middleware for Next-Generation Signal Monitoring System

PLATH's new Network-Centric Intelligence (NCI) architecture uses COTS-based DDS standard middleware from RTI to handle massive performance boost across distributed monitoring networks

SUNNYVALE, CA—August 18, 2009—l-Time Innovations (RTI), The Real-Time Middleware Experts, today announced that PLATH GmbH, a market leader in SIGINT/COMINT systems, is using RTI Data Distribution Service middleware in the latest generation of the company's broadband scanning receiver for signal intelligence applications. This fully upgraded system will cover the complete range of VHF and UHF communication and will detect all fixed-frequency emissions almost seamlessly.

Despite PLATH's considerable engineering resources, the product managers realized they could no longer develop every part of this significantly upgraded system in-house. They therefore decided that a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based environment such as the Object Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) was needed to minimize integration and support tasks. This also allowed PLATH to manage the increasingly shorter time-to-implementation that today's customers demand.

"Based on our next-generation NCI architecture, our latest SMS2040 monitoring system has delivered a massive increase in performance to users. This major development required a fully scalable publish-subscribe messaging middleware environment to provide a modular integration backbone for real-time data management and distribution. The COTS-based RTI Data Distribution Service offered the ideal solution as the most mature, easy-to-use and best-performing real-time middleware product available," commented Martin Ostendorf, director, Software Development at PLATH.

PLATH unveiled the first of a new range of signal monitoring systems, the SMS2040, at their 6th International Symposium in Hamburg, Germany, on July 1, 2009. The system's next-generation NCI architecture lays the foundation for a completely new, modular, high-performance product line, the SMS 2000/5000. A dramatic boost in performance was required to handle and manage the greatly increased data flows in real time across the widely distributed network demanded by modern applications. This greatly improved capability and scalable performance will allow PLATH COMINT/SIGINT monitoring systems to be used in a wider range of increasingly demanding intelligence scenarios.

About RTI Data Distribution Service

RTI Data Distribution Service is a high-performance messaging and integration infrastructure for real-time, net-centric applications. It meets the demanding requirements of mission-critical systems, including deterministic performance, low latency, high throughput, reliability, safety and security. By providing loose coupling between applications, RTI Data Distribution Service dramatically reduces the time and cost required for real-time system integration, maintenance, upgrades and technology insertion.

RTI Data Distribution Service provides application programming interfaces (APIs) that comply with the OMG DDS specification, the leading standard for real-time application integration. RTI also natively supports the Real-Time Publish-Subscribe (RTPS) wire protocol for peer-to-peer interoperability with other RTPS-compliant DDS implementations. RTI is the world's leading supplier of DDS-related software and services.
