Ultra Electronics Selects RTI Data Distribution Service for Modular Sonar System
Ultra Electronics Open Architecture Systems Integration Service (OASIS) Running on RTI's Real-Time Middleware will see First use in Air Warfare Destroyer Integrated Sonar System for Royal Australian Navy
SUNNYVALE, Calif.—September 13, 2010—Real-Time Innovations (RTI), The Global Leader in DDS, today announced that Ultra Electronics (Ultra), a market leader in defense and aerospace systems, is using RTI Data Distribution Service open-standards middleware in its latest-generation integrated sonar system for the Hobart-class Aegis destroyer.
Ultra is developing the sonar system for the Royal Australian Navy and the prime contractor Raytheon. To optimize the system, Ultra has created an Open Architecture Systems Integration Service (OASIS) architecture strategy that leverages the open-standard Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) from the Object Management Group (OMG). This gives both the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Alliance and the end-user community a modular integration environment for the complete system with unprecedented levels of system interoperability.

Ultra's open architecture toolset abstracts the software design from the hardware implementation. This enables hardware selection late in the implementation phase, resulting in significant cost savings for Ultra and its customers. Since Ultra's product also provides this abstraction to Ultra's customers, substantial through-life cost savings are realized for system upgrades and maintenance. RTI's implementation of the DDS standard transparently supports many processor and transport platforms, making it an excellent fit for Ultra's development and product strategy.
Performance has been a key requirement of the system design. The advanced sonar design required the integration of several subsystems. The design also demands a fast real-time data fusion capability. RTI Data Distribution Service real-time messaging middleware met the highly demanding performance requirements of this integrated multi-sonar subsystem.
Military sonar systems must be robust, and DDS provides the necessary inherent failover and takeover capabilities required. Thus, a modular sonar system built with RTI Data Distribution Service can be far more robust than other designs, delivering a system with the potential for enhanced survivability in hostile environments.
With the broader adoption of DDS by Ultra, the AWD Alliance has the opportunity to more tightly integrate the sonar system into the broader ship-wide system of systems. The AWD Alliance need no longer treat the sonar system as a black box with fixed, static interfaces. By leveraging RTI Data Distribution Service, the delivered open architecture enables a much tighter integration of the sonar subsystems into the broader shipboard combat systems than ever before.
