Architecture studies can be customized for specialized needs. One such specialization, requested by many customers, is the Safety-Critical Architecture Assessment.
For best results, we recommend an architecture study as early as possible during system development. By conducting a study early in the system lifecycle, you have the freedom to make the most effective architecture and design choices in critical areas such as scalability, resource utilization, performance, bandwidth management and fault tolerance.
An Architecture Study is essentially a detailed analysis of your distributed system architecture and risk areas, conducted over a period of 1-2 months. It is led by a dedicated senior RTI Application Engineer with access to the collective knowledge of the entire Professional Services team and hundreds of prior customer engagements. An Architecture Study begins with an in person assessment of the essential use cases and requirements for your distributed system. Your system data distribution architecture and requirements are reviewed to determine whether industry-typical architecture and design patterns can be applied. System design areas with significant returns on investment include:

We also explore system design issues to identify and potentially mitigate cost, technical and schedule risks. In the end, we document and deliver these findings to you in a Findings and Recommendations Presentation.
RTI offers a Safety-Critical Architecture Assessment in conjunction with Verocel, Inc. This assessment extends an Architecture Study by adding in-depth safety-critical and system certifiability design analysis.
To design an optimal certifiable architecture and reduce as much project risk as possible, it’s best to leverage middleware, platform and safety-critical certification expertise at the start of your project. RTI and Verocel have combined their expertise to address the difficult task of designing systems such that the system software can affordably satisfy the safety certification criteria -- especially when having to absorb enhancements.
The Safety-Critical Architecture Assessment provides an analysis of system data distribution, integration, platform architecture and certification requirements. This includes mapping safety-critical data distribution technology to system functional requirements and partitioning frameworks, as well as determining traceability and artifact evidence materials required for satisfying certification criteria such as DO-178B/ED-12B Level A.
The Safety-Critical Architecture Assessment can also cover:
- Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) certification of distributed system
- Certifying new and legacy modules
- Addressing the effort necessary in raising software levels (for example, from DO-178B Level C to A)
