RTI WaveWorks Software Family Streamlines Distributed Real-Time Application Development

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - September 26, 2000 -Real-Time Innovations (RTI), a leading provider of tools for embedded and real-time application developers, today announced it will be developing a family of products for vendors in the emerging market of distributed real-time applications. The WaveWorksTM family of products will include RTI's NDDS® publish-subscribe middleware and tools for crafting the real-time communications that enable these applications. Markets in which distributed real-time applications are beginning to appear include industrial automation, telecommunications, and military/aerospace. The WaveWorks products will remove the complexity of the real-time communications that currently constrain the scope of distributed systems and, in turn, market growth.

"The message from our customers and partners is clear-low-cost processors and easy networking make distributed processing practical and economical," states Stan Schneider, president and CEO of Real-Time Innovations. "In the near future, we see large-scale, distributed systems being built from off-the-shelf, best-of-breed smart devices purchased from different vendors. However, assembling smart devices into customer solutions is not simple plug and play. The communications between devices must be carefully planned so that each device's services are properly synchronized. With WaveWorks we provide a fast, efficient communications engine plus sophisticated tools for setting up the communication paths."

About WaveWorks
NDDS network middleware is a software layer that sits on top of the network stack and provides publish-subscribe services to simplify programming and communications. Without NDDS, a publisher must make network socket calls to find subscribers and then send the data to each address. With NDDS, the publisher simply calls the send function. Similarly, subscribers don't need to make socket calls to find the publisher address and then get the data. The subscriber simply registers his interest and starts receiving the data. NDDS takes care of all the network communications for the applications. The recently released NDDS v2.3 provides improved performance, new features to ease large-scale system development, and a Java interface.

The WaveWorks tools will be designed to help the intelligent device vendor and system builder work independently to produce fully-integrated solutions. For example, in response to a proposal request, system integrators would benefit from a tool that lets them simulate various combinations of devices to determine how best to meet customer requirements. After the bid is accepted, system integrators could use a tool that lets them build a test environment, download the code into each device and start communications.

The first WaveWorks tool will be WaveSurfTM, an application debugging tool that gives the developer a view of all of the NDDS objects sending and receiving messages. WaveSurf will also give developers a view into these objects to identify problems quickly or help optimize system performance.

Pricing and Availability
WaveSurf, currently being demonstrated, is slated for release later this year. The NDDS 2.3 toolkit, starting at $12,000, is available now along with run-time versions for a wide variety of platforms, including VxWorks, Windows 2000/NTTM, Windows CETM, Solaris, Linux, and HP-UX.
