News Releases RTI RELEASES SOFTWARE TOOL THAT TAKES THE GUESSWORK OUT OF DISTRIBUTED CONTROLWaveSurf decreases NDDS application debugging and deployment by 100s of hours SUNNYVALE, Calif. - March 5, 2001 - Real-Time Innovations (RTI), the leading provider of tools for embedded and real-time application developers, today announced the release of the WaveSurf debugging tool for NDDS-based distributed systems. WaveSurf is a debugging and visualization tool that shows developers using NDDS which applications are talking to each other across the network. NDDS is the communications engine selected by Schneider Electric and The Interface for Distributed Automation (IDA) Group for real-time communication over Ethernet among programmable logic controllers (PLC) and other "smart" devices. Using WaveSurf, developers can identify communication problems quickly, make changes without modifying a line of code, and try "what-if" scenarios to optimize performance. "Real-time communications over Ethernet is now an accepted fact and vendors are already planning applications that link ad hoc combinations of controllers and smart devices into seamless solutions," states Stan Schneider, President and CEO of Real-Time Innovations. "However, even for the simplest communications, figuring out who's talking to whom over the network can be a daunting task, and it only gets worse as more nodes and data topics are added. Many tools provide a view into a selected node, making it very difficult to see how that node is interacting with other nodes. WaveSurf provides views into all of the nodes and allows users to arrange the information into easily understood formats." Save 100s of Hours in Development & Deployment WaveSurf is a JavaT application that gives developers customizable views of the system configuration of domains, nodes, applications, and roles (publication and subscription are examples of the roles). Different views are typically necessary during different phases of development. For example, a programmer can configure the WaveSurf display to show just the publications subscriptions on a component to debug an application. At the same time, system integrators can set the view to show all the publications and subscriptions in a domain to configure an entire system. The user can also save and load views to reduce set up time or restore a specific perspective. Distributed system developers often need to change operating characteristics to fix problems and optimize performance. To reduce their effort, WaveSurf allows the user to change NDDS object parameters without modifying the application code. In addition, the user can add or delete nodes from the network to determine what affect additional data flows will have on performance and adjust the other nodes accordingly. WaveSurf also has a "what's wrong" feature that lets developers select two NDDS objects and then tells them why the two objects are not communicating. WaveWorks Product Line WaveSurf is the first tool in the WaveWorks product family for real-time networking. The cornerstone of the WaveWorks product family is NDDS, real-time publish-subscribe middleware that eliminates network programming. NDDS has a simple, easy-to-learn interface and is available for a wide variety of real-time and workstation platforms including VxWorksT, pSOST, Windows CET, Windows NTT, Windows 2000T, and Solaris. It uses the network stack provided with the operating system to simplify development and support. Over time, the WaveWorks family will expand the set of tools to help developers produce increasingly complex solutions in less time and to make them easy to deploy and operate. WaveSurf is available today. The pricing starts at $5,000 per copy. Real-Time Innovations, Inc. Real-Time Innovations, Inc.
