RTI JOINS IDA INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION GROUP

Brings Networking Expertise to the IDA Distributed Intelligence Strategy

NEW ORLEANS - Aug. 21, 2000 - Real-time Innovations (RTI) today announced that it has joined the Interface for Distributed Automation (IDA) group. Other IDA members include AG-E, Jetter, Kuka Roboter, Lenze, Phoenix Contact, Schneider Automation and Sick. A fundamental goal of the group is to build a software bus for real-time communications using Ethernet protocols. The bus will hide the complexity of network communications so that distributed applications can intercommunicate with no network programming. In addition, the bus will provide to device vendors and plant managers the long sought "plug and work" model for building systems. The benefits of the software bus will be reduced end user wiring costs, easier system integration and maintenance, and lower time to market for component vendors.

"RTI brings to the IDA group the expertise we need to use Ethernet for our real-time bus," states Martin Muller, System Marketing Manager at Phoenix Contact and IDA group spokesperson. "The IDA architecture is built around off-the-shelf software and industry-standards such as TCP/IP and UDP to keep costs down. RTI will help us build an open set of services based on its real-time, publish subscribe (RTPS) model."

"The RTPS communications model has already demonstrated its utility in a number of distributed real-time applications," said Dr Stan Schneider, RTI president and CEO. "For example, US Navy ships being built today will use RTPS for shipwide communications and next generation skyscraper elevators will use it to relay control and status data. Our goal is to establish RTPS as the standard protocol for conducting real-time communications over Ethernet. We look forward to working with the IDA group members to ensure the standard meets the rigorous communications requirements for the industrial automation sector."

In August, the IDA group selected RTI's NDDS network middleware to provide application services for their distributed intelligence model. As a member of the IDA group, RTI will lend their expertise to extend the real-time networking capability to low-end devices and help integrate control systems with the enterprise's data processing systems. The group will publish, in the near term, specifications for the RTPS wire protocol standard and the RTPS application services API. The group will also submit these specification to standards tracks in industry organizations such as IAONA and standards organizations such as the IETF.

IDA Group
The IDA Group is an affiliation of companies that combined their current marketing and technical efforts on Ethernet and Web technologies to develop a distributed intelligence architecture. The group plans to specify and implement a set of services based on open industry standards supporting distributed intelligence, links with business applications, Web integration, safety, tool interoperability, and device communication. The group will also provide the specifications and source code samples for free, develop compliance tests and certification policies to ensure interoperability among IDA-certified products, and provide training materials to ease development and deployment. See the Web site www.ida-group.org for more information about the IDA.
