News Releases RTI® Announces Support for New Real-Time Networking StandardThe OMG Recommends for Adoption the New Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems Specification Sunnyvale, CA - 23 April 2003 - Today, RTI announced support for the new Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) specification recommended for adoption earlier this month by the Object Management Group (OMG). The new DDS standard complements the OMG's CORBA standard to address data-centric publish-subscribe communications. Data distribution communications is a critical component of distributed real-time systems like simulators, control systems, medical equipment, factory automation and avionics. RTI will provide a commercial implementation of this important new standard and help further its development and use in the industry. CORBA and DDS The current CORBA standards work well for applications in which services can be logically separated into clients and servers. However, the client-server model is not well-suited for real-time, data centric applications. "Many real-time applications need to distribute data among processes with low latency, minimal network load, and predictable fail-over," says Dr. Gerardo Pardo-Castellote, chief technology officer at RTI and co-author of the DDS specification. "The OMG produced the DDS specification so that application developers can finally use standards-based products to efficiently distribute data." RTI Will Provide DDS Implementation RTI will provide a commercial implementation of DDS's publish-subscribe API with NDDS -- RTI's data-centric publish-subscribe middleware. An updated version of NDDS with the DDS API will be available in July 2003. NDDS was specifically designed to meet the needs of distributed real-time applications. It provides an easy-to-use; efficient publish-subscribe interface to the underlying operating system transports. Using NDDS, developers can focus on the application logic rather than the networking aspects. This greatly simplifies the development of robust, multi-platform, distributed applications.. In addition to NDDS, RTI provides the WaveWorks tools to help analyze and debug the distributed application. For more information on NDDS and the WaveWorksT tools, go to www.rti.com. About RTI RTI (Real-Time Innovations, www.rti.com) is a leading provider of software tools, middleware, and professional services for distributed real-time systems and embedded applications. For over 10 years, the ScopeTools product line has been helping embedded system developers produce higher quality, more reliable solutions.
